Ferry
Ok there's this song that goes( now bare with me) So ferry, cross the mercy?, this lands the place I love and here I'll stay. That's all I know I've heard it a few times throughout the years and every time I here it, it has been on an oldies station. Does anyone have a clue as to who sings this song?

The title is "Ferry Across (or 'Cross) the Mersey" from the film of the same name. It was released in 1964 by Gerry and the Pacemakers (part of the Merseybeat revolution that sprung up after the Beateles made it big) and was written by the group's vocalist Gerry Marsden. It was a Top Ten hit and was subsequently released again in support of victims of a major disaster at a soccer ground in Sheffield (northern England) in 1989 when Liverpool were to play Nottiçngham Forest. It was sung by a host of star names, including Gerry Marsden. The song's about the boats that operate a shuttle service over the River Mersey in Liverpool and I can't catch one of those ferries without the words to the song runnuing through my mind. And I bet I'm not the only one either!

You're welcome
Whatever Gerry Marsden Cd You buy, It'll have "Don't let the Sun catch you crying" and the other theme song of Merseyside "You'll Never Walk Alone" Which almost everybody knows the lyrics to. Dates back to 1945 and the Film Musical "Carousel"
Marsdens version has yet to be bettered I've heard dozens of other cover versions
http://olympia.fortunecity.com/grange/614/u_will_never_walk_alone.htm 3 versions on this link. Realplayer link(green) not working on my computer

Other 2 Links run Ok on Windows Media Player
Heres another song by Gerry Marsden:
I like it plays on Media player got this off a Russian site
Heres the page click on the links at the bottom to hear more British Groups and singers from the early 60's links are about 2/3rds of the way down the pages
They average over a minute each which is about half the record (full length is 2 mins 30!)
Note: I don't speak Russian LOL
Translate this:
quote:
Exactly!
Thanks for the links bedstor, I really like the last link with all the minute clips, I also found another song I liked "Sunny Afternoon", I've heard it before but never knew who sang it either. There's some good songs on there too. LOL about reading Russian, I have a hard time reading my own handwriting. Thanks again.
Some of the lyrics are a bit dated now! "People around every corner, they seem to stop and say, 'we don't care what your name is boy, don't let them take you away'". More fitting lyrics for a modern day Liverpool would go something like :- "People around every corner, they always stop and say, 'Give us yer bleedin' wallet!'"

Just had to come back on this one. I went to Liverpool this weekend (courtesy Easyjet) and for the first time in a while got the ferry across to the Wirral. It was Saturday Ferbruary the 5th. In the old days there was a boat across to New Brighton I remember, but bnow there's just the one service plying between Seacombe (for Wallasey) and Birkenhead. Gosh it was cold! And with heavy drizzle in the air too. They charge £8.50 for a return round-trip these days, which I found a bit expensive as there were four of us, advertising the trip as a ride on "The Most Famous Ferry In the World". And as people are disembarking when it's all over, they play the old Gerry and the Pacemakers song over the sound system. I was glad of that because now my memories are intact.
