Yes,good answer Bedstor,he died from an arrow wound, shot by the Calusa Indians,in the area of what is now Fort Myers.

Every source I read said that he died in Cuba from the wound received in Florida.

That's right DG,PDL was wounded in Florida (Fort-Myers area by the Calusa Indians) and his crew return with him to Cuba where he later died .I was not implying that he died in Florida.I could have used better phrasing. Source
