I have to right a lab report on the bunsen burner activity I just did. What the teacher had us do was stick a pin through a match and suspend the match in the bunsen burner and then light it. The match never lit. I need help with two questions.

  • Why didn't the match light?
  • Is the higher or lower portion of the flame hottest on a Bunsen Burner?

    Thanks!

There are three things needed for fire.
heat, fuel and oxygen. I've never seen this demonstration. It sounds interesting. Part of your lab study is to hone your observation skills.. You have fuel, you have plenty of heat.. There's a port on the side of the bunsen burner for air..but something else is going on... What happens if you turn the gas off after the match is heated in the flame?
