How about showing that there are spaces between the water molecules? Take a 16 oz pop bottle and remove the label so it is clear. Put two cups of water in the bottle, measuring each cup. Mark the level of the water with a water proof pen. now empty the bottle. Measure one cup of water and put it in the bottle, then measure one cup of rubbing alcohol and add it to the bottle. Put the cap on. Turn the bottle over end over end a few times to mix. Notice where the new level is? Why is this? There are spaces between the water molecules that the alcohol goes into.
You can also put a drop of food coloring into the alcohol or water to make it more visible to the audience on the second filling. Anyone have other experimental idea? |
