I know the C is the captain, but what about the other guys w/ different letters (e.g. A)? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 06-07-02, 08:29 AM CoolDen There are usually two players with the "A" on their sweaters. They are the assistant captains, and have the same right to talk to the ref that the captain does.
06-08-02, 08:01 AM Yankees15 I always thought the "A" meant alternate. They were the captain only when the captain wasn't on the ice. I could be dead wrong though. I do not claim to be any sort of expert on hockey.

With some teams in the past, they chose not to have a player with the C They chose to go with an extra A So your assumption of the alternate is flawed. The A is assistant captain.
06-11-02, 09:34 AM CoolDen I think I will defer to Y15. Now that I see it in print, "alternate" rings a bell. That might be right.
Whichever is right, the guy with the "A" is the one who's allowed to chat with the ref when an on-ice representative is needed.
06-11-02, 03:18 PM Matiqua I'm not sure but I believe the 'A' to mean alternate. On all the EA SPORTS NHL games it says when choosing captains in the roster: 'pick an alternate captain to switch places with:' then a players name is chosen. Also in 'Wendel Clarks trivia challenge' on CBC a question was 'what does the A on a players jersey stand for? a) alternate or b)assistant. The answer was I believe alternate. Also as an answer to The_Fiend alternate means 'another'. That means that they can choose to have 3 alternates as they share the same responsibilities a captain would. It's all in the coach's choice.
06-14-02, 01:43 PM clarebear You are all right. It means both Alternate and Assistant. Ice hockey teams play in shifts of players so the Captain isn't always on the ice - so there are also two Assistant Captains or Alternate Captains on each team (that's the A on their jersey) There should always be a Captain on the ice. Assistant or Alternate... they are both the same. They all have authority to talk to officials. Trust me on this one.. I'm from Detroit. smile
06-17-02, 03:07 PM farang Alternate is the A. It is our national sport.

He calls them assistants.

"Much to your surprise, Hockey is NOT the national sport of Canada.
Lacrosse is." - The Fiend
Much to The Fiend's surprise (whenever someone tells him), hockey IS one of Canada's two official national sports. Below from Wikipedia -
Canada is a nation with two official sports. Since its founding, and until 1994, the official sport was lacrosse, a sport invented by Aboriginal peoples.
In 1994, First Nations groups objected to a government bill that proposed establishing solely ice hockey as Canada's national sport, arguing that it neglected and obliterated recognition of the game of lacrosse, a uniquely Native contribution. In response, the House of Commons amended the bill "to recognize hockey as Canada's National Winter Sport and lacrosse as Canada's National Summer Sport." On May 12, 1994, in Bill C-212, ice hockey joined lacrosse as official sports of Canada.
