11-24-06, 07:55 AM Colin, Paris, France I'm a bit late responding to this post, but remember Martina Navratilova complaining to the umpire once about a grunting Monica Seles (who I think started it all). "She's not allowed to put me off, right?" said Navratilova. The umpire apparently didn't agree and the match went on. A victory for the grunt? Undoubtedly.
11-24-06, 11:11 AM FredPuli What is so strange is that the top men don't grunt as loudly as the top women, if they grunt at all. The grunt seems to be part of the training, as though the noisy exhalation helps the shot. Incidentally, there has been a brief fashion for soccer players to yell out, as though in pain, when tackled. This was to reinforce the impression that the tackle was both unnecessarily violent and a foul, as if diving though the air like an acrobat and rolling around dramatically clutching the face isn't enough to con the referee any more Big Grin It has been brief ( I last encountered it in a Monaco home game last season) seemingly because FIFA suddenly declared it ungentlemanly conduct and directed referees to caution players for doing it. Perhaps it's too late to save tennis by introducing a similar directive. It was always the law in soccer that players were not allowed to distract an opponent by shouting.
