People say I have the talent to act. I love doing it. How can I get started? what are the procedures I have to go through to get into being a bigtime actor?

Ron - acting can be fun and a lucrative business - but there are so many local actors in the world that becoming famous is a task that is almost impossible unless you know someone.
But I can offer suggestions on how to get started. First, you should look into taking local acting classes. Some feel that acting in an innate ability but taking classes is important because you learn techniques and are exposed to different genres.
Once you have taken a few courses then find a photographer to take a head shot and then mass produce. This can be done relatively inexpensively through printing companies. Then scour your local papers and audition for theatre roles. After you have a little experience under your belt, pull together a resume and go agent hunting. NEVER pay someone to represent you upfront. If they ask for a retainer walk...no run the other way. A legit agent will take his 10 percent off the top when you are hired for a role. You should never have to write him a check.
Perserverance and strong self esteem are important traits to have. Never give up - but realize this will not be a short and easy journey. I wish you all the best!

Yes, i mean its great that you have found something you enjoy doing, but you have to be realistic and understand it isnt that simple to just 'get into acting'. A lot of actors are unemployed for a lot of the time and they struggle finding jobs. Imagine being turned down from 19/20 auditions you go to. Its a lot of rejection and you have to be prepared for that. Just a warning...... Good luck though if it really is what you want to do.

Glad you're upfront about wanting to be a serious actor. I also agree with Georgia about the classes, they teach you the little things people take for granted but do notice. It's hard work and few jobs far and inbetween, depending on your attitude and your seriousness that one job will be the big one. Don't let people push you around, but learn from them so you can get ahead. Break a Leg!
I have a friend who decided in her 50's that she wanted to act. She tried out with local theatre groups and starting getting roles on that level. And if she didn't get a part in the play, she helped out behind the scenes.
She signed up with an agency and last year got work in a regional commercial. She's still involved with community theatre and is having a great time. She's acting for the fun of it and if she makes a little money doing it, that just adds to the fun.

I'm glad you said that Rakuchild - that means there's still hope for me!
And Ron - remember us when you make "the big time"! Good luck to ya! It may or may not be tough for you, but remember: Somebody's gotta do the job - might as well be you!
