You can have as many or as little as you want. The groom might only want let's say 3 friends, but you have 5 sisters - are you going to tell hubby that he has to find 2 more friends? Many weddings I have been to have had the same amount, but it's not neccesary.
Nope, you do not need matched sets...A spare bridesmaid/groomsman would walk solo in the recessional right behind the Flower girl/ringbearer, ahead of the paired attendants. Two "extras" might be split up, with one bringing up the rear or they could walk side by side behind the flowergirl/ring bearer. Good luck with the planning and my best wishes for a long and happy life.

Whose wedding is this? Is this the Wedding of the witnesses who may need a matching set of stand ins on either side to balance out the look, or is this the Bride and Groom's wedding who have elected their most trusted friends and relatives to stand with them on one of the most important day of their lives?
If you pick the first than I strongly urge you to balance out the numbers on either side of this equation.
If however you see the merit of the latter, then it is perfectly alright for one side to have one (or more) more than the other.

Thanks for saying this... I just wanted to have my two siblings stand with me, but the groom and his mother says it will look best if its equal.
