What are some good first dance songs that are not overplayed? I don't want the top 40 wedding songs. I'm looking for something more obscure that is rarely played at weddings. I don't want Shania, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams or any of the pop/sappy overplayed songs.

I found this:

"It's so nice to be with you" by Gallery

Any ideas of something you haven't heard in a long time that is great?

Pick something that feels right to you. It doesn’t have to be traditional. It could be the “Rubber Ducky” song if that’s what makes you think of your partner. What is your favorite song together? Is there something that comes on the radio that automatically makes you think of each other?

My husband and I chose “Angel” by Aerosmith. We wanted a song that meant something to us, we didn’t want to pick from the previously-approved lists. Smile

A word of warning, though: play your song first and dance to it together, before you’re out on the dance floor in front of the whole world. Turns out, “Angel” is a really long song… Wink

Rubber Ducky! That's funny. Big Grin

I like Truly Madly Deeply and From This Moment On. They just seem so "common". I really want something that isn't long (I don't dance) and meaningful.

Wouldn't it be funny if I played Paradise by the Dashboard Lights?! LOL

Choose a song that is meaningful to the two of you- My own first dance (first wedding) was to Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" and if Craig and I had had music, our first dance would probably have been Def Leppard's "You Won't Ever Have to Say Goodbye".... and since you like Meatloaf, why not "Paradise..." or "For Cryin' Out Loud"?

I was lost til you were found
But I never knew how far down
I was falling
Before I reached the bottom
I was cold and you were fire
And I never knew how the pyre
Could be burning
On the edge of the ice field

I was kidding about Meatloaf. hahahahhaha

quote:
So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you!!!

Hey Clare,

For the ceremony, should you be having music, skip "Fight the Good Fight", or "Onward Christian Soldiers"

For the first dance, maybe cross these off your list:

* 50 Ways to leave your lover
*Highway to Hell
*Another one Bites the Dust
*It's the End of the World As We Know It
*I used to love her, but I had to kill her
*How can I miss you when you won't go away
*They're Coming to Take me away
*You Can't Always Get What You Want
*Goodbye to Romance
*She F'in Hates Me
*Die my Bride
*Lyin Eyes

Clare,
I hope you have a wonderful day, and I know you will pick the perfect song without any help from me Big Grin

I really want to thank you for the advice. You are so right. (as usual)

Firefall feels right so that must be the one. Smile

P.S. Angel is a beautiful song. I will add that on my play list.

Clare, My Sweet Friend,
I cannot tell you how deeply it pleases me to think I might have contributed something to your wedding... other than my most sincere wish that you'll share long years, great joys and small troubles.
Love
Shana

Clare, you are very welcome. When my husband and I were first dating I was away at college it was very difficult for us and I used to say to him on the phone “come and save me tonight,” so when it came time to pick our first dance song, “Angel” was the obvious choice. But, like I said, it was much, much longer than we remembered. Smile

Really, though, pick what feels right to you. We had Vivaldi for our walk down the aisle (no “here comes the bride, fair fat and wide” for me!) and the Imperial March for our introduction, and when we cut the cake we had “Pick up the Pieces” by the Average White Band. It was awesome. I’m so glad I was steadfast and made things happen OUR (well, okay, MY) way. If Firefall feels right, that’s the one. You’ll know.

Don’t forget the father-daughter/ mother-son dance song, if you’re doing that. It was important to my father so we did the first, but not the second. We chose “La Mer” as sung by Kevin Kline on the “French Kiss” soundtrack. Because of the French and because it was somewhat obscure, and because “Daddy’s Little Girl” and “Butterfly Kisses” were overdone, and not right anyway.

So, to sum up: do your own thing! Whatever feels right. Smile
