In the UK By law you have to be Corgi registered to do any maintenance on any Gas appliance and does the same apply overseas or is the Consumer law Lax in your country?

Corgi? Is that by Royal Appointment? For years I had the image of some gasman turning up with a small Welsh cattle dog, of the breed kept by Her Majesty Smile The site doesn't say what Corgi stands for, if anything. Don't tell me the GI is for 'gas installation' Frown

Initially, gas installers could become affiliated to CORGI on a voluntary basis. In 1991, however, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asked CORGI to maintain a mandatory register of competent gas installers in the UK. CORGI became the “Council for Registered Gas Installers”. CORGI's responsibilities have now extended to include Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and we are also working to improve gas safety in the other Channel Isles.

There is no national registry for this sort of work, but please remember, Bedstor, before you say we're "lax" that the US comprises 50 states, each of which is at liberty to impose whatever regulations it deems appropriate.

The regulatory agencies and tradesmen's associations do a fine job, overall, of protecting consumers- and with an estimated 20,000 workmen doing gas repair in the UK without registration, I'm not sure CORGI is so much protection.

Mrs S

This organisation came into existence as a result of this small accident
quote:
In 1968, the 22-storey Ronan Point apartment block in Canning Town, London, was devastated by a massive gas blast that claimed five lives.

The tragedy led to a determination to protect the public from unsafe gas installations. CORGI was duly founded in 1970 and was given the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out safely, but was known then as the “Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers”.

I'll be moving this to a more appropriate forum as soon as I can figure out where it goes.

DG Suggest either the
Home Building & Construction or Home Improvement & Repairs sections

Have no Consumer/Household Safety issues section.
