So it seems that the American Nazi Pary have adopted a highway in Oregon, promising to clean up litter on this road at least twice a year. Boy Scout troops and other civic groups usually assume such responsibilities. So do you think that this group should have the right to participate in this program? What if they wanted to adopt a highway near you? Here's the story. **************************************************** 02-03-05, 07:38 PM MrsS I HATE, HATE, HATE the idea, but I also know that if ANY legal group, however repugnant, is barred from participating in the "Adopt a Highway" program, then EVERY legal group or organization that is even a tiny bit controversial could be barred as well, including the Scouts. So I have no choice but to support their right to do so....gagging all the while. (And considering putting some REALLY nasty rubbish on "their" stretch of road shortly before a clean-up day Wink)
02-03-05, 07:41 PM honilov So far as a 'right', yes, they have it. I'm sure they expected an outcry and are gloating about it. The best thing to do about groups like this is to ignore them and let them wallow in their own hate. If they adopt one near me, maybe I will put enough litter on their stretch to keep them busy. Big Grin Wink
02-03-05, 08:04 PM juanruiz Well said, Honi. Most such groups are not acting out of altruism, but rather desire for publicity.
02-03-05, 10:52 PM jusork If they're looking for publicity, why get it by adopting a highway?? Highway adoptions don't usually make the news do they? Maybe I'm an optimist, but as long as it's something as positive as promising to pick up trash, who really cares what they do?
02-04-05, 07:53 AM juanruiz Well, the story made CNN.com, so I guess they got the publicity they wanted.
02-04-05, 09:31 PM Kelleygirl Hey, at least you've got a negative force doing positive tasks if nothing else. Yeah, they did get some attention from this article, Juan, but bringing up their name may also help serve as a constant reminder of who they are and what they did so that generations after we're gone this is not forgotten.
02-05-05, 05:45 AM MommyTimesTwo I see nothing wrong with it.
Look at it this way: if they're out there cleaning up the road, they AREN'T spending that time doing hateful horrible things.
02-05-05, 06:45 PM aminator2002 So they're out there picking up garbage, all together in one place... seems like a prime opportunity for a drive by shooting to have positive results.
02-07-05, 07:50 PM MrsS LMAO@ Ami!
02-07-05, 09:14 PM DvdGStwrt Well Good for them, doing something positive for the community.
Though I would hate every single minute of it, and though I may personally think that a little drive by shooting may be a good idea, I have to admit that I can not see my way clear to taking their right away to clean a freeway just because they are of the Nazi Party.
It would be kind of hypocritical of me to demand equal rights then step in and demand that someone loses their equal rights.
Even though I know that if I and the Rainbow League for Gay Marriages adopted a freeway next to them they would but up a big old squawk demanding that us prancing fairies just leave off so they don’t have to see us – that is the difference though that really matters – I’m more of a man than that. Prancing fairy I may be, but a bigger man I are in the end Wink
