In the Uk Most Hospitals are State funded if you pay fully (for treatment and your stay ) You are deemed to be "Private".Obviously You may stay sometimes in a State hospital(If it specialises in a certain treatment). But you are segregated from the rest(Us Commoners ) in a private room ...Does that ring a Bell with You?

Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but I don't think the systems in the UK and the US can be compared in that way, Bedstor. In the UK, everyone is covered by the NHS, and then they can opt for private care by paying extra, as you say. But, as I understand it, in the US, the level of care you are entitled to, depends on your insurance company, and is essentially all private.

I was born 'at home' in a private maternity hospital. My father, sensing a business opportunity at the end of WW2, bought a property, in early 1946, which he then converted to a maternity hospital. That was in time for what became the 'baby boom'.He 'explained' to my mother that his sole reason for doing this was for her: the romantic one that I could be born 'at home', since he owned the place, whilst under the best medical care. Hmm.Not a mention of profit or market forces or demand... (No, she didn't believe he was that noble, either )
