What determines the gender of a baby? The sex of a baby is determined by the two sex chromosomes inherited from the parents. A baby will normally inherit one sex chromosome from the mother, and one from the father. A woman has two X chromosomes, so she can give either of her X chromosomes. The father can give either his X or Y chromosome. Since the egg already contains an X chromosome (from the mother), the gender of a baby is determined by the X or Y sex chromosome of the sperm cell from the father (thus adding one more thing to the "blame it on the husband" list if things don't go as planned). A girl baby will result if the final arrangement is XX, and a boy will result if it is XY. As you would expect, about half of the sperm cells contain an X chromosome, and half contain a Y chromosome. It is possible to have an abnormal number of sex chromosomes, however, this is extremely rare
03-28-05, 09:49 PM Doug The male does in fact choose the baby's sex and not the female. If I ever got married and had kids I would want 1 of each girl and boy. I'm sure there is scientfic way of making that happen but I don't think I could live with 2 boys or 2 girls or mess around with nature and have things go worng with expermenting.

Lets see if I can put this in a very simple term.
A girl is XX and a boy is XY. Mom is XX and Dad is XY.
Baby gets one chromosome from each parent. The parents will give one of what they have to the baby.
A baby automatically gets an X from the mom. She can only give an X because she only has XX. Dad can give either and X or a Y because he has both X and Y.
Since the baby automatically starts out with the X from mom, the baby's sex will be determined by whether the Dad gives and X or a Y. It is up to the Dad.
Mom ONLY can give an X so if Dad gives X then baby is a girl.XX= girl
Mom ONLY can give an X so if Dad gives Y then baby is a boy. XY= boy
The dad determines sex because he can give either chromosome and the mother can not. She can ONLY give an X because that is all she has. The father is giving either an X or a Y. I don't think I could take the risk of any bad results. Any links on this?

The investigators found no evidence that the ability to choose would lead to distortion in the representation of one sex or the other. The commonest reason for wanting to decide the sex of the child was to bring 'balance' to the family. No evidence was found to support the contention that some groups would choose mainly boys, for example. (Some of us would: have you seen the bills to be paid by the bride's father ? Big Grin )

If we did it would it be possialbe for 1 or 2 or 3 babies to come out? I just want one at a time or 2 boy and girl if possible. Can you pick the number of eggs to be fertlized by a womans period cycle? or is it just the luck of the draw it it attaches its self or not.

Most woman wiil normally ovulate just one egg at a time around mid-cycle, but sometimes (once every 250 births or so), that egg will split into 2 after fertilization, resulting in identical twins (same gender). Fraternal twins are more common than identical twins , they come from the fertilization of 2 separate eggs released at ovulation, and they may be of the same gender or one of each. Overall, about 1 in 100 births or so are twins; the chances of having triplets or more are quite slim...UNLESS you go to those fertility clinics where drugs increase the number of eggs released at ovulation, and multiple births are much more common...quads, quints, or more in some cases. If you wish to choose the gender of your child, Jusork's site above gives some tips, but I wouldn't rely on it. The fertilty clinic can give better results, but that's a last resort in my opinion. 'Tis better to rely on the luck of the draw, and if you have say a boy the first time, and hope for a girl the second, but end up with yet another boy, believe me, your disappointment will be short lived as soon as the baby lets out his first cry.
