I'm asking this because it pretty much sums up my situation. What would you do?

Imagine that you began a new job about 2 months ago. You hate it. You feel sick with dread when you wake up in the morning. You spend the day fighting tears because you hate the job so utterly. Your best days are days when you come home and think, "That wasn't as horrible as it could have been."

Your coworkers and boss are all very kind people, and they think you're doing a good job. Your job is important and not something that another can easily do. You know it will be hard for them to replace you, but you HATE the job.

There isn't much you can think of that anyone could do to help you you like the job better.

You have an offer for another job that will pay better and that you're sure you'd like better, but you are going to let a lot of people down if you leave your current job, and you'd probably make a lot of people very angry. Not many people realize how unhappy you are, mostly because you know that they can't help you. Also, by quitting, you'd be breaking a contract.

Question:
Would you quit?

Choices:
Yes
No

If you hate your job as much as you say, you are threatening your health. Is your job, or a contract, worth losing your health over? It wasn't for me, and I walked out...and felt better almost immediately. Even my friends noticed how much better I felt. Give your current employer notice, explaining that the you just felt that the job was not right for you. Accept the job offer that you have, but give yourself a week in between jobs to relax; you want to go into the new job refreshed and stress-free.

If you have another job in line, you think you will like it better AND you hate your current one THAT badly, well, of COURSE you should put in your notice and resign.

I agree with everything Dor said and I also agree with taking just a bit of time between jobs to relax.

Lastly, why would they be angry? Just say you have a job offer you feel will make you more happy and suit your needs better.

Question:

If your coworkers are all nice and think you are doing a good job, what is it about your current job that you hate?

I'm a bit nervous about saying, because then you'll know what I do... but here goes. I'm bored to tears with the subject I'm teaching and the students are driving me up the wall. I'm teaching remedial classes (which I've never taught before) and I'm learning fast that I don't have the patience for teaching students who are so utterly unmotivated, nor do I have the stamina. The others think I'm doing a good job because they aren't in my classroom every day. I don't feel that I'm doing a good job. I just think it is time for me to leave this field (and the new job offer is outside of teaching), but I feel terribly guilty about doing this to my principal and my peers, who have been nothing but kind to me. But every morning, I feel sick just thinking about the fact that I have to face another day of it.

Teaching is an EXTREMELY challenging job. Remedial teaching is even more challenging many times because students often HAVE the smarts but, for whatever reason, aren't motivated to learn.

They might even have very good reasons for NOT learning (I ended up in such a class shortly after my family moved to a totally different state- Maine to PA- and then my cat died within a month of the move.. I was only 8 or 9 years old and was in a severe Clinical Situational Depression that either no one recognized or knew what to do about it), but that often doesn't make the teaching of such classes easier.

I often think Special Needs is 'easier' because you usually know what you are getting into to begin with and the burn out rate is stressed quite a bit during training.

DO you hate TEACHING.. or just teaching this SUBJECT? Would you be happy teaching a differemt assignment?

The benefits in the State System are often hard to pass up, especially retirement, etc.

Leaving the field IS really a drastic move for as much training as you do to get into it. I am totally NOT trying to change your mind, just help you evaluate all aspects of the situation.

How different is this new job offer? What would you be doing? (If you don't want to say, of course you can refrain from answering Smile)

Quit. You don't owe colleagues your effort. If you have another job lined up that seems more satisfying, take it.

This is a no brainer. Give two or three weeks notice and get out of there.

Everybody in life does jobs they absolutely despise. I hate the fact that I work at Wal-Mart, a faceless, money sucking, corporate giant, but at the same time I actually enjoy the fact that since I started in February I've went from a loley Instock Clerk for $8.00 an hour to a Merchandise supervisor for $10.50.
There are a lot of factors with your question. The one that urks me is the contract. If you break the contract are there legal consequences that will involve heavy loss of money?
I know if it was me I would never sign any contract without checking things out first for at least 2 weeks to a month.
Also, if you really hate something sometimes if you have bills to pay, you might just have to suck it up and continue working. At the same time looking for another job.

If you hate your job that bad and you really absolutely think you can live with yourself and the consequences of quitting. Then I say go for it. Because everyone deserves to be happy, but there is a fine line between making yourself happy and just being selfish.
