Because people have a very strong tendency to generalize based on what they have seen, can easily see or can believe exists, I think. Usually it's for things they themselves don't care about and if they couldn't see others caring about something, they could say 'nobody cares.'

dg: I had been thinking, as you, about nobody caring about each other, but then jusork added that the expression is also applied when apathy is apparent about whatnot. If we have made any progress in this thread, it is that the statement is more broadly used and applied than we had thought. Now, more than before, I am wondering what is behind the statement's use, and apathy seems to be one cause.
