I know that you use parenthetical notes for an MLA paper when you copy a sentence directly from the book. Do you use them when you paraphrase, or is it sufficient enough to include paraphrased sources in your works cited list?

Thanks!

If you are consciously paraphrasing someone's writing, then you are borrowing it no less than if you quote it exactly. Indeed, the distinction between exact quotation and paraphrase is wholly unimportant as far as the need to document goes. You would chose to paraphrase rather than to quote exactly mainly for stylistic reasons--because the borrowed material can be more smoothly integrated into the flow of your own text that way. It is nevertheless borrowed. Document it fully (whether with endnotes or, using the MLA style sheet, notes in parentheses inside the text). cool
