Hi Charles. Welcome to AnswerPool. I apologize for taking so long to respond.
I personally don't think that prisons rehabilitate the criminal. While someone is in jail, they can learn how to be a better criminal. I think the crime, violence and drugs become the lifestyle. The strong prey on the weak for money and sexual favors. Many people who go to jail end up joining gangs for protection. The recidivism rate is so high. Many prisoners end up returning within 5 years. It is so difficult for an ex convict to find work and housing. Prisons are overcrowded and I really don't see early release programs working. I do think that non violent criminals should have some sort of alternative. Someone who broke into a house and stole a TV can be the cellmate of someone who murdered an entire family. There are many people in jail who are innocent. I often hear about how DNA clears someone who spent years in prison for a crime they didn't commit. It is quite sickening. I think prison reform moves so slow because society doesn't care. As long as the person is locked up, nobody cares what happens to them when they are inside. Prison is a different world with different rules. Prisons may help in the short term by getting the criminal off the street. In the long term, I don't think it makes them a better person when they come back into society. |
