Okay, both of my dogs were gifts. One was a gift from a friend of mine who is a breeder and another one was a gift to my daughter from her father.

I have two cats that I like to think were both gifts.....the first (Lydia) was an actual gift from a customer who's sister is a breeder and the second (Emmie) was a "gift" that showed up to eat on my doorstep. Big Grin

Every dog I have ever owned has come from the animal shelter. We currently have two dogs (collie X)
who are 14 and 12. The oldest one was my Mum's but she got him from the shelter when he was a pup. Our other one was only 8 months old when we got her and had been badly treated.
It is not recommended giving a pet as a gift unless the person has specifically asked for one and knows they are getting it. Over here there are too many animals given as pets for Christmas which come January are got rid of because they are too much trouble or the novelty has worn off.

well we keep the horses we hav bred, but on the odd occasion we will buy a horse from an owner trying 2, saddly, sell it.

and we got r dogs as puppies from either a farm or the pound.

and we got the cat from a farm. we dont usually bother having cats, but when we went 2 look at some little puppies, they also had kittens and there were only 2 of them left. the farm owners said they were going 2 keep the last 1.

ne way, speaking of getting new pets, im suposed 2 be buying a new horse. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin we went down 2 look at it on thursday. its adorable! its a stallion, 15.2hh, thoroughbred X anglo-arab, and he is called Jet.

Even though mine were gifts I did know about them. Aimee wanted a rottweiler for her birthday and her dad, who does not live with us, and I talked about it and he agreed to get her one for her birthday. I probably would have screened the breeder better than he did but since all we wanted was a good pet that was fine. Sadly though the guy met us halfway bringing two rottie pups in the trunk of his carand it was a hot day. It's a wonder they didn't die. We bought only one but really wanted to rescue the other. The other pup, GSD, which was a gift is supposedly being earned by my daughter with helping out as our friend's kennel. However, I help out too but then what are friends for. Right.

Every cat I've ever had came to me as a stray. If I ever found myself cat-less, which doesn't seem likely Roll Eyes Big Grin, I'd adopt cats from an animal shelter. I'd ask to see the ones that are least "adoptable," for whatever reason (age, skittishness, etc.). All animals can enhance a person's life, even when they aren't "perfect," and it would make me feel good to know I gave those "misfit" cats a second chance at living out their days in a good home.

My cats were given to us for free. When i lived in an apartment building, there was a couple down the hall from us who's cat just had kittens. my mom passed their place one day and saw the kittens. i guess she must have talked with the lady cuz when seh came back to our place she told my brother and i to come with her because she had a surprise for us. Anyway, long story short, we got the two cats from this couple, who was giving them away to a good home for free. Big Grin

We have three dogs all were found. Coco our Cocker mix was found in the street stopping traffic when she was a puppy about 10 weeks old. Feefee our full blooded Yorkie was found in the street smelling like smoke(We think she may have escaped a burning building, she has a morbid fear of fire.), she was about two at the time. Be'be' our beagle/terrier mix was found in the parking lot of the local supermarket she was about 6 months when we found her. Pictured ads in the local newspaper and at the animal contol produced no owners so we had them vaccinated and spaded. We have had five years with Coco, four with Feefee and 6 months with Be'be'and hope to have many more. We have a cat named Minnoux, found by Coco in our flower bed on a cold, wet November night about 17 months ago. She was 2-3 weeks old at the time, she barely had teeth. She is cat-napping atop my 19 inch moniter as I type, waiting for me to take her to bed. She sleeps between me and my husband every night. She has been spaded also. Our four-footed friends have blessed our lives with love and laughter and we are devoted to them. Did I mention we have two budgies, Oscar and Felix. They were purchased at pet store.

Let there be cats -
My big black cat Gremlin came from Wal-Mart! Really!
He was born in the Garden Center and his mother was hit by a car.
My son was working there when four little kittens came crawling out from under one of the bins! Of course, they were quickly adopted - and I'm SO GLAD my son brought home this one!

And then there were two -
I didn't get my fuzzy little brown kitty Jesse - she got me!
She wandered into our yard one day and my daughter started feeding her. She was the only cat Gremlin couldn't run off! And she was just too pretty to give away so...

My cat was found injured in a garbage dump and taken to the vet to be put down. My vet was able to save her and then gave her to me when my cat was killed by a car one night when he got out of my apartment.

My two dogs are both rescued. My maltese came from a "recycled pet" store where people can abandon their pets. I got my chiahuahua from the Santa Ana Pound one day before he was put to sleep.

My Jerry came from the Humane Society along with his brother Tommy, but Tommy had kidney failure and died when he was only two. Last July we got Lucy from a man my dad works with, their kitty had five kittens and we got to pick. Smile

I saw an ad in the paper for a Silky Terrier for $50. Knowing these things are $300-500, I rushed over there and bought him. The next day the people called and wanted him back. I said "Ha ha!" About a month later they came back and said they were worried he wasn't getting to run enough. But when I suggested they keep him while I went on vacation, they backed quickly off. Don't know why, he's a little doll.

What a great question!

A really nice and caring guy I work with was watching an abandoned kitty. Since he already had 2 cats and 2 ferrets he offered me the kitty. Smile

My cat Isabel was given to me by my co-worker's boyfriend. He found her up a tree, soaking wet, and surrounded by barking dogs.
I gave her a great home and she is spoiled rotten. To this day she loves trees and is scared to death of dogs.

Let's see. In chronological order (earliest to latest)

-My parents got their first dog I think at a shelter in Napoleonville, Louisiana (and they called him Napoleon)
-Then found the companion to Napoleon around their apartment and took her in
-Then I was born and five years later moved to a new house where we adopted a stray cat within a month I think
-Then adopted a second soon after
-Then about a year later, we took a pair of kittens from a friend of ours who had kittens
-Then a cockatil from someone my mom knew
-My mom ught a budgie from a budgie breeder
-A few hamsters from the pet store
-Adopted our big dog (the one in my picture) from some kind of shelter at a pet store in Alabama
-My grandma died and we took her poodle
-A fifth cat that the neighbors couldn't take with them

I think that's the main ones. We amazingly haven't gotten any new animals in maybe five years.

Freebis Hagar and Wendy Jett came from the county dog pound. Freebis found Buffy Joplin and her mom and sibs in the alley behind our house. Long story short, we wound up with the pup and let Freebis keep her. Freebis (Aussie Shepherd) is now about 8 years old, Wendy Jett (German Shepherd, Rottie, Pitbull, who knows what all) is about 7 1/2 years old and Buffy (Chow chow/wolf/coyote/??)is about 4 1/2 years old. (Buffy strikes the pose and howls at sirens and whenever she is left alone.)

We found Weenie (black cat) about 4 years ago in October. His mother was the neighborhood kitten factory. Being that it was just weeks from Halloween, we took him in, concerned he would get hurt. Baron von Static (black & white longhaired cat) and his brother, Riddick (pitch black cat) came from a friend who is caretaker for a park in the country where people tend to dump unwanted pets. Their mother was a stray that our friend took in when she was pregnant. He found homes for all 7 of her kittens. Smile

Both my cats were strays off the property. My oldest one Shadow, was the product of a female stray and the property's maintenance man's male cat. He was born during a lunar eclipse 15 years ago and when my maintenance man moved he told me he hadn't found a home for the kitten so I told him to give him to me and I'd find a home for him (famous last words). My second cat, Spooky, was born on my patio by a stray cat (who also had been born on my patio and who I took care of for years). I've since found a place for the mother cat and kept the kitten.
