I have been having a person (man's voice) speaking to me when I am trying to fall asleep or already sleeping at night. My eyes are always shut when this occurs and I seem to be in some state of sleep. When I do hear him call my name several times he will also tell me to go to him. I always see black (no images at all) and sometimes cannot get myself to open my eyes -- in which case he keep's talking. I am not sure what this is. I don't believe it's a dream because when he calls out my name, most of the time I am fully asleep and it startles me to wake up and take notice to what he's saying but doesn't wake me fully where I can open my eyes which will make him stop talking! Does this make sense to anyone? Can someone help me PLEASE? What do I do? I cannot seem to get information anywhere on this subject. I have had this happen numerous times -- on each occasion he always calls my name but the directions are slightly different. Looking for any response out there! I do believe in the paranormal and am not scared! ************************************************** 08-29-06, 12:43 PM Elexina My guess would be that you are dreaming and your subconscious is trying to get your attention. I would try to pursue this further in your dreams, try to concentrate on the voice as you’re falling asleep and interact with it. Or, try mediating. In this way, you have more control and can seek out the source of the voice yourself.
If you believe it to be a ghost or spirit of some sort, you could try communicating with it when you are conscious, through some sort of scrying mechanism such as an Ouija Board or a pendulum. ************************************************** 08-29-06, 02:21 PM Georgia85 Some would argue that hearing voices is symptomatic of mental illness. Then there are those who have a more modern view of this scenario and will go to great lengths to find a meaning to the voices and even try to pinpoint the location of the voice (i.e. are you hearing the voice through your ears, or is it more of a thought that enters your head coming from outside yourself). These people do not view hearing voices as part of a mental disease. They regard the voices as a meaningful and real event with the purpose of speaking to that person in a metaphorical way about their lives, emotions, and environment. Since you are only hearing your name, it would seem that you are just beginning the process of developing a line of communication between yourself and your "voice". Given time, you can come to accept that the voice actually belongs to you and that it can help you to develop a point of view about yourself and help you to learn about yourself.
Whatever you chose to believe about the phenomenon of hearing voices, it is still considered by clinical psychiatry as an "auditory hallucination" and often times associated with schizophrenic disorders, manic depression, and psychosis. If this continues you might want to mention this to your doctor. I'd lay more stock into this being medically related than paranormal related. ************************************************** 08-29-06, 02:45 PM VelvetVoice What is he saying to you? Give me some examples of the talking. What are you feeling when you hear his voice? Curiosity, fear, anxiety, euphoria, etc. Does anything else go thru your mind? Does he remind you of someone in your life? What is happening in your waking life right now? It could be the voice of your subconscious. I need a lot more information if I am to interpret for you. ************************************************** 08-29-06, 04:54 PM Woman9469 This post is for VelvetVoice. I am glad to hear you would like to know more because judging by some of the information I've been getting it doesn't seem to be supporting much but "hallucinations".
I usually am asleep soundly when I will be abruptly woken to a man's voice call out my name several times -- Denise, Denise, Denise! This last time he told me he loved me and to come with him. I am unable to open my eyes and saw no images -- just blackness. I was able with some difficulty to actually speak out loud. I said "where are you" and the response that followed was "I'm right here". At that point I was awoken by my boyfriend since he heard me talking out loud. I do believe I am in some sort of dream state since it takes a while to wake up. When in this state I am able to hear what he is saying and aware enough to remember what was said when I am able to wake up. I've also heard a woman speak my name while a child screamed "mommy". When I hear this, my first response is to be scared but that quickly changes to curiosity. I want to understand what is going on. The man's voice sounds familiar. As I think about it further I believe it could possibly be a friend of mine that passed at a young age due to a motorcycle accident. This person that I am speaking of died in this accident while on the way to pick me up.
As far as my waking life, I have the normal stressors everyone has and never hear "voices" at any time but during these few incidents. I believe if it was voices due to a mental conditionn they would be prevalent all the time. These incidents have occured maybe 4 times on a sporatic basis. It is scary because I am totally asleep and the voice literally says my name so loud it awakens me!
I went on the website theshadowlands.net and found information that says there is a very good possibility that ghosts do communicate this way. However, I can't seem to get any other documentation on this issue. I've looked everywhere.
I certainly do not want to do the wrong thing if this is a paranormal experience. I'm not sure whether to try to respond or not say a word.
Thanks for listening! ************************************************** 08-29-06, 06:16 PM Georgia85 Actually I think I am the only one who mentioned "auditory hallucinations" and I did that to offer you a different view point. That's what answerpool is all about - different people with different background knowledge coming together to offer a variety of answers Smile ************************************************** 08-29-06, 10:05 PM Professor Another possibility in the realm of natural, rather than paranormal, explanations is the hypnagogic state.
quote: Hypnagogic sensations are vivid dream-like experiences that occur as one is falling asleep or waking up. Accompanying sleep paralysis can cause the sensations to be more frightening. The features of these sensations generally vary by individual, but some are more common to the experience than others.
Commonly these sensations are auditory, as well as sensing of a "presence." Unlike hallucinations, these hypnagogic sensations are considered normal. Obviously there is an overlay of details that are particular to each individual's personality and life experiences.
Perhaps you should consider this before jumping to the (extraordinary) conclusion that your experience involves something supernatural. ************************************************** 08-29-06, 10:12 PM DorianGreyed I used to get those all the time, Prof. For some reason, they stopped. When researching them, I found that many people were claiming that they had the same thing happen to them, and that they knew it to be an alien who was in their house and had somehow "immobilized" them. I wasn't buying that. (Now if I can just find out what that little piece of metal in the back of my neck is, everything will be OK.) ************************************************** 08-29-06, 11:08 PM Professor Just don't ever remove your tinfoil hat, DG. Eek ************************************************** 08-29-06, 11:19 PM DorianGreyed I even wear it to bed. ************************************************** 08-30-06, 06:55 AM Elexina

I am not familiar with any information indicating that ghosts speak to people through their dreams. Paranormal experiences usually occur during waking moments, as far as I know. That is why I would lean more toward another explanation -especially if there are no other indications of the paranormal such as disturbances or objects moved, etc. ************************************************** 08-30-06, 09:22 AM Woman9469 I want to thank everyone for your input -- keep it coming! To the Professor, I read your link regarding the hynagogic state and completely understand this possibility. I have had those "types of dreams" and felt that state of sleep many times. The reason this appears different to me is that the way I am awakened is by someone screaming my name. In my "normal" dreams, during my entire life, I have never heard my name called. I do believe that the state of sleep you mentioned is where I am at but what about the calling of my name and telling me to "come with him"? This usually wakes me from being totally asleep to the state of sleep you speak of. Is it possible to hear such "direct" statements like I mentioned? ************************************************** 08-30-06, 10:06 AM Professor I don't know, but which do you think is more plausible: (1) That you're experiencing some kind of altered state of consciousness associated with the hypnagogic state, dreaming, or lucid dreaming, perhaps augmented by an underlying 'suggestibility' based on your belief system; and that voices arise in your brain and are illusory, rather than actual sound waves impinging on your ears; or (2) Actual visitation by ghosts, which flies in the face of known scientific principles, and for which no convincing physical evidence has ever before been produced in the history of man?
Put another way: nobody can prove that it isn't a ghost, but how does this stack up against other explanations? What if it remains unexplained, just as most UFOs are simply 'unidentified' objects? ************************************************** 08-30-06, 12:49 PM VelvetVoice I would tend to agree with Professor about the hypnogogic state. It could also be a form of sleepwalking, except no movement is involved. When you dream, your body experiences paralysis so you normally don't act out your dreams. Sometimes the switch in your mind doesn't shut down the muscles, so you get up and walk around or in your case talking. I have had entire conversations in my sleep that I cannot recall, and do not recall the dream I was in either. My daughter also sleepwalks and talks in her sleep.
People I know have also had out-of-body experiences, they dream about places they go to and then can describe in detail a place where they've never been, and know things about people they've never been told. I highly doubt this is what you are experiencing/about to experience. Also, I highly doubt the paranormal, spirits would manifest in several different ways and you'd notice other changes in your life.
I still say your subconscious is trying to tell you something, and I can't know until you do what the voice is telling you. WARNING: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE YOUR HUSBAND/BOYFRIEND/OTHER LOCK THE DOOR AND HIDE THE KEY IN AN UNEXPECTED PLACE. AND HAVE NO ACCESS TO WEAPONS, SUCH AS KNIVES, GUNS,NEEDLES, PILLS, CHEMICALS, ETC. I AM NOT A DOCTOR OR PROFESSIONAL, SO MAKE SURE YOU WILL NOT BE IN ANY DANGER. Get up and go with the person attached to the voice. Try to remember what you feel, what they say, your surroundings, etc. If you get anxious, look at your hands, that way you will know if you are still in a dream state.
My guess about this dream: you are looking for your next direction in life. You are thinking "what if I had married this person" or "what if I had pursued this career". I bet you've never thought about this type of question before, are you about age 30 and thinking about your future?
