I've been having this sleep problem for over a year now. Sometimes mostly in the morning if I'm dreaming I sometimes figure out that I'm dreaming and I try to wake up but I can't for a very long time. It's very scary sometimes when I do this and in my dream I see myself in my bed or in the old house I use to live at. I yell and hit things in my dream to try to get myself to wake up but it takes a very long time sometimes to get awake.
I panic sometimes in my dream because I see one of my pillows sometimes on my face but when I wake up there is nothing there.
My doctor sent me for a sleep test about six months ago at a hospital but couldn't sleep while I was there. I have sleeping pills that my doctor has put me on and seems to help some but I still have these dreams every once in awhile. My doctor told me I could try the sleep test again if I wanted to but it's very hard to sleep with wires hooked up all over me.

Sleeping pills and sleep tests can help with physical issues or simply mask the problem to allow you to sleep, but it seems like the dreams are what's causing the trouble, not an actual sleep disorder. It might be better to figure out what is causing these dreams in the first place. They sound like stress dreams, like maybe you feel trapped in life and this is being acted out in your dreams. Try to keep a log of what you ate and what you did the day or so before you have one of these dreams, then see if there are any parallels.
