Unfortunately, you can't claim a dependent unless they are related to you and/or they live in your house, or they are a dependent parent (in some cases). However, you may be able to claim all of the monies spent on him as charitable donations. You'll need to total up everything you have proof for, and see if is enough (under a certain amount and charitable donations don't really count). Just a note--you may or may not want to verify this opinion with the IRS or someone at H&R Block, as the IRS may not also consider this a charitable donation. If the amount were too high they may look into it. Additional sidenote--if there is a real problem with his mother, you may look into taking him into your home on a full time basis. This would not only give you the dependent to claim on your taxes but would have long term benefits for both you and the child
