Only showing about 3K in earnings this year...long story. Not sure how to take advantage of this bad situation with my 2007 taxes?

You may not have to file. See page 6 of the IRS Form 1040 instructions:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf

You may want to file if any taxes were withheld on your income to get a refund.
