I need to have a tidy up at home. How long in the UK do you have to keep papers like bank statements, pay slips P60's gas bills etc?

I don't think there is a set time but I usually keep bank statements and bills for six months. P60's and payslips need to be kept until the end of the current tax year. You will need them if you do your own tax returns. Make sure you shred any statements and bills you are getting rid of to prevent identity theft.

Hope this helps Smile

You'll be pleased to know that the reason the government says to keep your records for, in effect, six years is that that is the time limit for the recovery of debts. So if you find that they have overcharged you you have up to the six years to claim the money back.Beyond that, tough!

You will not be pleased to know (but probably not at all surprised to learn) that the government's claims for debts to it are never statute barred: 'time does not run against the Crown' ( or nullum tempus occurrit Regi as the most expensive lawyers say ). However, in a mood to seem fair, the practice of the Revenue is not to chase anyone back beyond six years unless they have, or suspect they have, grounds for suspecting some dishonesty or fraud. Now isn't that reassuring ! Big Grin Roll Eyes
