I think it would be much more relavent to compare taxes to insurance. For every dollar put in, there is a measurable benefit paid to the people who are paying.
If you don't want to pay taxes, you're going to have to give up many, many government benefits:
1) Protection offered by the military, coast guard and national guard 2) Protection offered by local law enforcement 3) Education (all schools would have to be private, and you'll have to pay for those out of pocket) 4) Stable economy (the fed often offers bail-outs, interest control, tarrif control, and other things to stablize our economy and avoid disasters like depressions and runaway inflation) 5) Rule of law (taxes pay for congress to make laws and judges to enforce them)
Just a taste. You can probably think of many more.
Perhaps the biggest reason why the "Robin Hood" comparison doesn't work is because taxation in the US is a little bit lopsided. Higher income brackets provide most of the revenues, while the absolute dirt poor actually collect in taxes without paying.
A list of programs paid by taxes available only to the poor:
1) Welfare 2) Food stamps 3) Unemployment benefits 4) College financial aid 5) Shelters 6) Prisons 7) Law suits paid to poor people who live by nuclear reactors and have kids with 16 fingers
In addition, poor people collect payments through income tax refunds. They can actually get a lot more back than they ever paid in, and they can get refunds even if they claim EXEMPT on their W-4!
So there you have it: our grand government actually steals from the rich and gives to the poor! We don't have to hide in a forest and do it ourselves!
