Laser eye surgery, weight loss programs, long term care insurance and some OTC medications are now deductible as a medical expense.

I know some members at the pool have gotten these procedures done this year. Just something to remember when filing your taxes this year!

The Internal Revenue Service lets you deduct medical costs as long as they are more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income.

You also have to itemize to get them. For most people, if you don't have a home mortgage, you won't have enough expenses to itemize.

However, Clarebear is right to point out that deductible medical expenses are expanding every year, and the list is already long. If you ever do itemize, it's worth your while to look at the list (see instructions for Schedule A), and don't forget prescriptions, and ALL forms of medical insurance.

Pregnancy is another very large expense that you can take most or all of.
