i was just reading the thread here about gambleing and someone commented on how is the catholic church didn´t offer bingo, they wouldn´t be able to support themselves. i currently live in germany and the churches here get money from taxes. you can choose whether you´d like to pay a church tax which gets send to the denomimation of your choice or you can opt out of that in case you don´t practice any religion or would rather give offering in the church itself. i´m sorry, i don´t know offhand how large a percentage it is, maybe 10% (the same as tithing). what do you think if this act were introduced in america? would you volunteer to be taxed? i am going to ask this question also in the western religions section too.
cresen, I just was trying to find that statement, but i can´t, sorry. i am not saying that i agree with it, i´m sure it is just the sillyness of someone who has no idea about the topic. but it also wasn´t the point of my question.
with my question, i meant that excluding the legal implications of the subject, would you volunteer to be taxed for your church? i am asking about you, not whether it´s legal.
But, no, I wouldn't volunteer to be taxed so that the government can turn around and give the money (less administrative expenses?) to an organization I could have directly supported in the first place.
In the U. S., government generally makes demands of those it provides money to. A private university that accepts government money, for example, becomes hostage to certain requirements that it otherwise would not have to deal with.
