i was just reading the thread here about gambleing and someone commented on how is the catholic church didn´t offer bingo, they wouldn´t be able to support themselves.
i currently live in germany and the churches here get money from taxes. you can choose whether you´d like to pay a church tax which gets send to the denomimation of your choice or you can opt out of that in case you don´t practice any religion or would rather give offering in the church itself. i´m sorry, i don´t know offhand how large a percentage it is, maybe 10% (the same as tithing). what do you think if this act were introduced in america? would you volunteer to be taxed? i am going to ask this question also in the western religions section too.

Not a prayer...

No pun intended.

It's almost illegal to SAY god in public building in the United States. There's no way collecting tax for religions could be constitutional.

I'm a bit skeptical about the Catholic Church and it's reliance on BINGO, I'd like to see a source on that one!

cresen, I just was trying to find that statement, but i can´t, sorry. i am not saying that i agree with it, i´m sure it is just the sillyness of someone who has no idea about the topic.
but it also wasn´t the point of my question.

with my question, i meant that excluding the legal implications of the subject, would you volunteer to be taxed for your church?
i am asking about you, not whether it´s legal.

But, no, I wouldn't volunteer to be taxed so that the government can turn around and give the money (less administrative expenses?) to an organization I could have directly supported in the first place.

In the U. S., government generally makes demands of those it provides money to. A private university that accepts government money, for example, becomes hostage to certain requirements that it otherwise would not have to deal with.

Uh.... I already pay a tax to the church- the Church of Outrageous Government Spending.

If you fail to contribute to this church, They send their armed angels in flak jackets to take you directly to hell.

God needs to bless America. God doesn't need America to bless Him.

I also would never agree to be taxed. I think it is up to the person who goes to church if they want to help pay.

I agree with coldfuse. I am much more comfortable contributing to my church directly, as well as any other charity I'm inclined to contribute to.

What "value" does the German gov't, or any other gov't for that matter, add to the transaction?

Nope...I agree...DOA. I don't need the govt's help on this one.
