This is a question that came up. Does the radio station pay the racord label to play songs or does the record label pay the radio station to play their songs? How does it all work?

The radio station is supposed to pay royalties to the record company, who then pays the artist and the songwtriter while keeping a portion for its own profit. This is how it is supposed to work. However, it does not always work that way. See this site for an early history of payola, the practice of paying DJs to play certain songs, thus making them more popular. More can be found here, a site which says that payola is still rampant, as does this site , the recording artists' coalition.
