They all dressed like that in the 70s, and it seems to me, most of the male singers sung with these incredibly high voices. A problem that can probably be attributed to the fashion of the day, and not what they were smoking before they went on stage.
That's called "falsetto," and many singers sang that way, though some of them are pretty old: Frankie Valli, the Beach Boys, Bee Gees, and Freddy Mercury of Queen.
I thought it sounded a bit like Supertramp, one of my favorite bands.
