This has probably been asked before... but I feel that the song is an old one updated for the show. Am I crazy?

It is unlikely that the theme was an older tune. The composer was Dennis C. Brown, and the show won 3 BMI Film & TV* Awards for music.


Having said that, I have to admit that I don't remember the theme and that it easily could have bee "inspired" by (read stolen from) something else. Remember, there's only 7 notes, and some sharps and flats. All the rest is just octaves, tempo, and arrangement.

Remember, that was only my opinion. I could be wrong. (And there are many on AP who would willingly point out exactly when I have been, and some you wouldn't have to ask.)

Another thing to remember is that Jenna Elfman (nee Butala) (Dharma) is the niece of singer Tony Butala, who founded and performs with the vocal group The Lettermen. Her husband, Bodhi Elfman, is the nephew of Danny Elfman, of Oingo Boingo. There was not really a need to go outside the family for musical talent.
