Why do you think that some people are fascinated with cartoons? I know some people who love to wear Mickey Mouse shirts. They never even watched The Mickey Mouse Club. Most of the people who think Betty Boop is so cute have never even seen a Betty Boop cartoon. (I've only seen a couple) There are a number of people who get tattoos of Goofy, Donald duck, Taz and many others. I know this girl who LOVES Tweety Bird. Everything this woman owns is Tweety. Have you ever seen someone with Tweety earrings? LOL This other guy I know has a tattoo of Sylvester. I just don't see the fascination. Sure, I watched cartoons as a kid. I had my favorites. I think cartoons are cute but not THAT cute. Most of the shirts are kind of cheesy and sloppy looking. (mostly worn with really long, way too big and with those stretchy pants) I don't hate cartoons. My icon is a carebear but that just goes with the name. I would NEVER get a carebear tattoo. I've been to Disney World. (I even had my pic taken with Goofy!) I just don't see the allure of adults wearing Winnie the Pooh. I don't even see mass marketing for this- people just seek it out on their own. Do you know anyone like this? Do you love cartoons? To what extend? Why? +++++++++++++ 04-23-06, 09:48 PM jusork All those characters are well-known enough in today's culture that they've become well-known as characters on their own. Especially Mickey, whether the Mickey Mouse club or Steamboat Willy. (Is Mickey Mouse actually in the Mickey Mouse club, through?)
And I don't think those people love cartoons as much as they love those cartoon characters. And they are interesting characters. Ones that people easily know in our society, and I imagine that's part of why people get those characters.
Also since most cartoons we've seen are entertaining, we easily associate cartoons with fun entertainment. So much can be done in cartoon form, too, which I'm sure adds more to the interest. That's goes for today's popular cartoons that still aren't as popular, too. But I wouldn't say that I watched Family Guy or South Park for any reason other than the humor. I don't know if it's possile to do, but I'm sure it'd be just as good if it were converted to some kind of active stand-up.

I know you like Family Guy. (Me too!) Would you ever get a Stewie cartoon tattooed on your arm? What about a Kenny Tattoo? Would you buy a wardrobe full of Family Guy shirts? I'm not saying anything is wrong with cartoons. I have a Schoolhouse Rock shirt. I just think people are taking the cartoons to extreme. I just don't see the allure.
Mickey is a big part of the Mickey Mouse Club. I remember the song. Smile
04-24-06, 11:34 AM jusork If I was a tattoo person, I might get one...although I'd probably rather get a tattoo of a funny moment from one of those shows since I'm bigger on moments. How do you think Peter fighting the giant chicken would look across my chest? Although I've always kind of liked Tweek from South Park. I could get him on my buttcheek and make him twitch.
Anyway, I'm sure for people who get tattoos of a character, it's the same value as a T-shirt with the character on it. So why do people pay for such things? Do you own any Family Guy paraphernalia? Well, as someone who's obsessed with Lost, I think I'd say it's because they're huge fans and they want to show it in a fun way. If they made some T-shirts of Desmond saying things, I might buy one. Haha. I can imagine it now. A picture of Desmond holding a gun asking, "Are you him?" or "What did one snowman say to the other snowman?" It's not as good as hearing him say it, but still.
04-24-06, 11:51 AM aminator2002 I used to wear a Mickey Mouse shirt occasionally and I had a Simpsons shirt. I had a curious George shirt that was pretty funny too. Curious George hits a tank of Ether... cracked me up.
I think cartoons are fun. I don't think there is much analysis needed... watching cartoons, getting a shirt of your favorite character or a character that you simply think looks neat is fun. That's all.
I would never get a tatoo of any type but why do you think the current trend of tribal tattoos is better or worse or at all different than the cartoon character tattoos? I think it shows something about a person's personality and character... my enjoyment of cartoons stems from the same place that it did when I was a kid. They make me laugh and I think it's fun to watch them. And some of them are even clever and downright hilarious.
Sometimes a good comic book or a cartoon is just what the doctor ordered. I love it.
04-24-06, 04:54 PM clarebear Good answer Ami. I don't have a huge collection of spoons, dishes, collectibles or anything. I never was into just one thing. I tend to collect memories and dust. Wink I think I'm gonna buy a Mickey shirt this summer- just because. Smile
P.S. I don't get the tribal thing either.

How could anyone not love watching the Adventures of Captain McBragg... it's still funny just thinking of it. Don Adams was the voice of Tennessee... and whoever thought of the name Mr. Woopie was pure genius.
Then of course there is Underdog, Huckleberry hound, Yogi Bear, Bugs and friends, Rocky and Bullwinkle, George of the Jungle, Speed Racer... now you've done it. I've bought the DVD set of Tennessee and Underdog.
Hope you find a cool Mickey shirt... I wore mine out a couple years ago and haven't replaced it.
04-25-06, 11:30 AM clarebear I remember seeing an animal activist shirt. Curious George was lying on a hospital table with probes and wires hooked to him. The doctors were doing something or another to him. The caption read:
Look What The Curious Are Doing To George!
The junior carebear shirts won't fit. They are made really small.
04-26-06, 07:08 PM Rakuchild I watch cartoons every day. I'm glad there are cartoons for adults now. Can't say I watch many of the old toons or the kiddie toons any more. Adult Swim has some surreal stuff, like "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and "12 oz. Mouse". Much of the anime is beautifully done with intriguing stories. I'm not so much into finding clothing with characters on them any more but there are dolls all over my house and displayed in what would be the china cabinet (if I had good china). Wait, those aren't dolls, they're action figures- because guys don't play with dolls. Big Grin
The only character I would consider for a tatoo is Grr from "Invader Zim" because he's so sweetly carefree and doesn't let his job get in the way of watching tv and eating candy. (Shouldn't we all?)
Cartoons can get away with stuff we can't get away with in life. And some of them live the life we wish we could, be it a superhero or a sponge living in a pineapple under the sea. It's just escapism.
