Aspirin is known as acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) it is found in the bark of the willow tree.
Hippocrates discovered this but was not determined how until 1830(-5+)when they discovered the salicin in the bark which gave it the pain relief.

That's just my two bits.

this is the question skeez was trying to answer.

just a note, salicylic acid, not acetylsalycilic acid, is found in nature.

salicylic acid was 'discovered' in ancient times (at least as far back as ancient egypt).

acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) was not synthesized until late in the 1800s. It is a better pain reliever than salicylic acid and causes less stomach irritation.
