Forest fire 'suppression and prevention' are both very much active today but nothing is fool-proof, and safety and loss are always a factor, regardless.

As for prevention, some states/countries use 'fire lookouts' as a means of early detection of forest fires. A fire lookout is a person assigned the duty to look for fire from atop a building known as a fire lookout tower. These towers are used in remote areas, normally on mountain tops with high elevation with a good view to spot smoke caused by a wildfire. Trained fire personnel that's staffing the 'fire lookout' keep an eye out for any fire or weather behavior that could compromise the safety of those on the fire line.

People living in fire-prone areas typically take a variety of precautions, including building their homes out of flame-resistant materials, reducing the amount of fuel near their home or property (including firebreaks', which is their own small control lines), and investing in their own firefighting equipment.

So far as 'suppression', fire-fighters are trained in the use of forestry tools, water pumps, brush breakers, and other motorized equipment, as well as fire behavior and fire safety. Water tankers, portable pumps, chain saws and other necessary equipment are maintained and ready for deployment. Individual members are prepared to lend advice and expertise in all operations such as water handling and fire behavior. Most fire-prone areas have large firefighter services to help control bushfires, as well as the water-spraying fire apparatus. They use large crews of people that travel in trucks to the fire. These crews use heavier equipment to construct firebreaks, and are the mainstay of most firefighting efforts. These fast attack teams are helicoptered into smaller fires or hard to reach areas. They use portable pumps to douse small fires and chainsaws to construct firebreaks or helicopter landing pads. In alternative approaches, firefighters attempt to control the fire by controlling the area that it can spread to.

Still, these methods can fail in the face of wind shifts causing fires to miss control lines or to jump straight over them (for instance, a burning tree might fall across a line, burning embers can be carried by the wind over the line, or burning tumbleweeds might cross the lines).
