Is Central America considered part of North or South America? If it applies to both, where do cartographers draw the line? (No pun intended)

I was always taught, and every map I've seen, considers Central America to be part of the North American continent. And it includes all of Central America, so the line would be the boundary between Panama and Colombia.

North America extends from Canada down to and including Panama, and also numerous islands in the Caribbean Sea. Central America includes everything from the southern border of Mexico down to and including Panama.
