Pueblo indians talk about Lava being spewed out of the mountains and hummingbirds saving them in one of their legends. All the the lava in Arizona that I saw is extremely old. I would think it was there long before they wandered into the area. How did they know about the Lava?

Sunset Crater erupted about 900 years ago, so this may have been the basis for the legend. The Pueblo could also have had experiences with volcanoes elsewhere before moving into the area.

As I looked a little further, I found "Human history here spans at least 10,000 years." That page talks about the effect the eruption of Sunset Crater had on local society.

Thank you so much for the sites Methos. I had forgotten about Sunset Crater. That would explain it perfectly!
