In swamps, layers of vegetation get burried by other layers quickly. The bacteria that cause decay die before they can completely decompose the vegetation. The upper layers become heavy and push down on the upper layers, squeezing out water and other things that would help the vegetation decay. The longer and deeper the coal is burried, the higher the quality of the coal produced.
