A recent article in the Guardian mentioned a possible Mormon contender for the next Presidential race. I thought you might be interested in a reader's letter in reply.

"Is America ready for a Mormon president" (G2, February 27)? It's a good question - just how much difference will that extra "m" make?"

The person in question is Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusets.

I live just outside of Boise Idaho, which is a close contender to being the Mormon capitol of the world, and we still have a liberal mayor!

As long as we have liberals, we will never have a Mormon president! It's bad enough that we have an evangelist in the White House, we definitely don't need a Mormon president!

The thing is, the Evangelical religious right will gang up against him too.

They try, and they try, yet our liberal mayor has managed to keep the 10 commandments off of city property and the Mormon church out of city politics so far. Proof that the U.S. Constitution is more powerfull than religion!

I would consider voting if the candidate had any pull to get the kids in suits to stop knocking on my door.

I think they both do the same thing, but the clean cut kids in the white shirts and neckties seem always to come in pairs, they are the Mormons, while the Jehova's Witnesses come in an assortment of genders and differently dressed groups. IMO. The mormons want to get in and talk and pray, the Jehovas W. usually want to pass out their pamphlets.

We have a couple of young men here in my hometown that I see once a week in our neighborhood. They wear suit pants, a white shirt and a tie. They ride around on their bicycles with their helmets on and they stop at the same houses each week.

They stopped here one week and asked if they could tell me about the Second Testament of Christ. I said, "Sure, as long as I get to tell you about the Original Testament of Christ, and I get to go first!"

Funny, but they never stop here anymore.

Acid test: Offer 'em a cup of coffee. From the Mormons you get a lecture. A polite lecture.

But gotta give it to them, avoiding tea, coffee and alcohol, their life expectancy is better than ours. Big Grin
