How does the United States deal with people who claim a right of immigration or residence by reason of seeking political asylum? If the press and public opinion surveys are correct this question of asylum is set to be a big issue in our forthcoming election. In common with other countries we are to accept anyone who has a legitimate claim that they are political refugees. Not surprisingly we found very quickly that very large numbers had no such legitimacy but were, in truth, economic migrants from beyond the European Union. These people seek parity, by deception, with those from member states (who have a basic right to work anywhere within the Union ). It has not escaped the notice of the public that many pass through several other member states on the way here. This is odd ( ) because , if they are genune refugees they could claim asylum at the first place they land. There is an argument, not wholly born out, that we are an easier touch for them than other places en route.
This camp, originally established for genuine refugees from Kosovo, was being used by anyone hoping to take advantage of British rules, which were very easy. They came from all over.
