It was just announced today in our state that TennCare, a comprehensive healthcare program for those who could not otherwise afford it (and a plan so attractive that people moved here to get it), has been abolished because revisions to it would have reduced the number of people who would have been eligible for it in order to meet budgets. This happened because of several lawsuits that were filed to keep it as it was. The plan will now revert to the most basic Medicaid coverage. 400,000 fewer people will now have health coverage than before. Everybody loses.

My questions are: Why did this happen? Were lawyers eager to make a buck on a class action suit to blame? Were those whose benefits would be reduced (and will now mostly be eliminated) too greedy? Why would anyone want this to happen rather than make a small sacrifice? Is this indicative of the rest of the country? (If I can’t have it all, I don’t want anyone else to have any.)

I just don’t understand. Any ideas?

While it appeared to be a good idea in the beginning, it obviously became apparant the State of Tennessee bit off more than it could chew. And when new residents move in for a piece of the pie along with trial lawyers doing their maneuvering, the Governor of Tennessee had but little choice to take the action he had to take.
