I have a friend that was a Marine. He has nothing to back this. He he lost everything in a fire.

How do you go about getting military papers replaced? He needs this for employment purpose.

Any advice appreciated.

There would be countless sources to get copies. Tell him to call his last post. Call the local Marine recruiting center. Call the Marine HQ in his region. Call DFAS. Call the DoD in DC. Call any Marine post and ask them. They would obviously be able to direct him to Personnel. Here's the Marine's website--look it up on here.

BTW--how on earth does he have nothing to back this? Doesn't he even have friends who knew he was a Marine? Former Sgts? I can understand losing paperwork in a fire but unless he spent his entire tour sitting alone in a dark room someone else knows he was a Marine and can give him the reference.

MX2, I had the exact same question. I guess that I should explain how this question even came up. I rent a room to a male co-worker.

I'm going through a lengthy and ugly divorce. I have the house and a rough time playing catch up with bills that were left to me after my husband moved out. To make matters worse, my escrow account is 4k in the red from lack of adjustment, which I have to pay off over 12 months. My furnace is a 1928 coal convert. My house is old, with huge windows, and large. I got two months warning about my house payment almost doubling starting in winter months.

I knew that I couldn't afford the house. My unemployed husband refused to help me, with a jointly owned house. He is either going to let it go to the bank, after years of ownership or pushing me to sell. I needed to rent a room out to someone that would not disturb my daughter.

The guy I rented a room to, his girlfriend suddenly left him. He is quiet, keeps to himself, and has no drug or drinking issues. He needed his girlfriends financial help to pay for their apartment. He looked like you had to scrape him off the floor, for months, he was so devastated by his girlfriend moving out. He was trying hard to make it and live through his loss. He was working agency and double shifts constantly.

He needed a financial break and so did I. There have been no problems at all, with exception to minor ones. Then, I talked to his ex-live in. She is convinced he was never in the Marines and said why. It was compelling enough to give me doubts.

He has told me about a relationship, that went really bad, with a woman in the Marines, who he lived with. He told me, before his ex made accusations that he was never in the Marines. He said that she burned everything he owned, I mean fire. He had nothing, after this relationship. He has talked to me about her and how bad their relationship went, while he was in the Marines.

Do I want someone in my house that is psychotic enough to lie about being in the military? Absolutely not! There have been a few other things he has said that have bothered me. I want to know the truth. Is this guy straight up or a psycho? If his multiple military stories are not true, as his ex is convinced, I do not want this guy living in my house.

That is why I need to know. Scotty, I just used your site, since it was the first one I caught, with AP e-mail. I will fax this tomorrow, at work. MX2, I am going to take a look at your site now. I can't deal with a psycho living under my roof, rent or no rent.

MX2, please walk me through this site you gave me! I don't see where I can find out the information I want, whether this guy was in the Marines or not.

Unfortunately, there's no way to get that kind of record without his social security number. Every single record in the US military is by the social, and you can't get anything without it.

If you do get it, since you aren't the member yourself, you should call your nearest recruiter and ask him how to find out if that guy was in or not. He should be able to look it up for you right there and give you a yes or no answer. Be sure and tell him you are look at this guy as a potential renter and you want to verify his employment history. All they'll be able to tell you is Yes, he was in or No, there's no record.

This includes, I should warn you, even if he only went to say a week of BMT and then was kicked out. Technically, he was in, and the system will show that, and legally, they aren't supposed to tell you more.

The online systems will only work if you are the member, trying to get your own information (or a spouse, getting your husband's).
