The closer we can get to an election in which the national winner of the most votes wins the election, the better off we are. We are no longer a collection of states forming a loose union, and haven't been for quite a while. Federal laws affects us equally, why shouldn't each vote have equal value. (Yes, I realize that this means amending the US Constitution, but the Constitution itself provides for such amendments. It is past time to do so.)

I feel that a president should be elected by the people, not by an electoral college, which most people don't know about or understand anyway. Each vote should count and the candidate with the most actual individual votes wins.

I recall in 2000 that there was some discussion about scrapping the electoral system by the Democrats after Al Gore won the popular vote and George Bush won the electoral vote. And, of course, the Republicans were having none of it. What I find amusing is that, in the months prior to the 2000 election, there was also talk of scrapping the electoral system in favor of a popular vote only. Except that in this case, polls taken at the time showed that it was entirely concievable that Bush would win the popular vote and Al Gore the electoral. And it was the Republicans who wanted to change it and the Democrats insisted on keeping the electoral system. Funny how things work when the shoe is on the other foot.
There are a couple of states whose elections are based on the outcomes of voting within their Congressional districts now, those being Nebraska and Maine. As far as I know, in neither case has there been a split vote, however.
