The wife of the President is 'the first lady'. What will the husband of a President be ? Will he be the 'first man','first gentleman', 'consort' or what?

I think "first lady" would still be appropriate. Wink
"First lord," perhaps? "First sir"? I imagine that should a woman be elected to the Presidency, whomever her partner is might have some say in the matter himself.

Even though it hasn't happened yet, I think the current assumption seems to have settled on: "first gentleman". I would expect that to continue. Gentleman being the flip side of lady in American usage, "lord" being too Royal for American taste, and "first man" being reserved for Adam. IMO.

First Gentleman, as Frank mentioned, seems to have merit. I am told there has already been a First Escort. Wink

gen·tle·man (j n'tl-m n)
n. A well-mannered and considerate man with high standards of proper behavior.

That eliminates Bill! Smile

All joking aside, these things are very difficult to predict. I remember when what we now commonly call "CDs" (short for Compact Discs) were starting to be introduced to the market. The makers of them introduced them to the public as "DADs" (short for "Digital Audio Discs.") That term didn't stick. Likewise, when the Internet was first coming on the scene, the phrase "Jack In" was one of the first terms to describe connecting to the Internet (since people would plug in a phone jack back then.) Once again, the term didn't stick and "Log On" became much more recognized. New terms and phrases have a way of evolving until one is eventually "agreed" upon by the public at large.

The term "First Gentleman" might become the norm, and if so, I would like to be the first to congratulate the lucky gentleman for marrying Dr. Rice as she is the single most intelligent, congenial and talented women in all U.S. politics, and she will make a fine President. Smile Wink

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that "First Man" becomes the standard phrase. It has less syllables for the talking head teleprompter readers of the MSM to read than "First Gentleman."

Even though it would be unbelievably good for the country to have Bill Clinton back in the White House, even as First Gigolo, it's not going to happen because there are too many people who think the way JohnGalt thinks.

So, we aren't going to have to worry about this.

Actually, no Hillary is not married. She has a partner. A political partner. Both parties of this political partnership agreed to put up the facade of a marriage in order to seize and hold power. But to call that partnership a "marriage" is to do a disservice to all the truly married couples out there whom actually love each other and entered into marriage for more than just reasons of craving power. Britney Spears' little 48-Hour Las Vegas quickie marriage was more of a marriage than the sham that Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham put forth.

Sadly, not enough people think like I do. And besides, rational thinking has nothing to do when a democrat (or a republican) pulls the lever in a voting booth, be they the alive voter or dead voter.

Besides, Hillary is raising so much cash, she'll eventually be able to buy her way back into the White House. (I wonder how much of that cash she will donate to charity?) I just hope she returns all the stuff she stole from the White House the last time she was there.

I can assure you, any human being who loves freedom and liberty will worry about Hillary seizing control of the Presidency. As bad as Bush is, Hillary is 100 times worse.

Maybe Iran, or any other enemy of the US.

Ah, yes, Bin Laden will be so releaved to see the Bush administration go - why, there was a moment a few years back when they almost looked like they might be interested in bringing him to justice.

I'd go for First Consort. Although, if the liberty-loving Bush continues to push the enevelope of the constitution (Suspension of habeus corpus? Hillary would have to be going some to be a hundred times worse than that) maybe you'll end up with simply 'King' and 'Queen'.
