It has essentially been eliminated in much of the South, so it wouldn't bother me a bit. A lot of people here call it a "Yankee Holiday." Big Grin

Weatherford is one of these typical "scholars" who writes from a 21st century perspective and completely ignores the Zeitgeist of the late 15th century. Of course what he writes is accurate, although actually leaving other interesting material out, but his goal is to have us all view Columbus with a completely jaundiced eye. It's an approach I warn my undergraduate students about avoiding. To have a PhD do it is inexcusable. But given his place of employment, I can't say I'm surprised.

I could think of a few other holidays I wouldn't mind doing away with. Or instead of celebrating them every year, perhaps only on Leap Year.
