To go along with the SS# question... I really hate it when people write down my DMV number on my checks (not to mention my address and phone number -I mean, if I wanted that stuff on the check, don't you think I'd've had it printed that way???). My father says that to use that number for identification purposes is illegal. Is it? Is that just a New York thing? Can I refuse to let them use the number? I mean, I know I can refuse, but are they legally allowed to require it, and could refuse me service if I don't provide?

Elexina, it's not illegal to use those numbers, but I believe you can refuse giving it. They'll ask for another form of ID, like a power bill. At least that's how I've seen it done. It really doesn't bother me that much as long as they don't have my SS#.

It is not illegal to ask for your DMV number...and you may refuse to give it, if you want...but if you do refuse, the business is equally free to decline your check.I get ticked when I am NOT asked to prove my identity because my cards have "CID" written on the back, and my checks have only name/address and account number. I had my organizer stolen a couple of years ago, when Craig and I were proving we got married, and every scrap of paper proving I am me was in it....I want them to check my lisence! Cash is still the best way to make a purchase anonymously.

As already stated, you can deny them the information and they can in turn deny you services. Businesses are instructed by police fraud departments to write down a person’s driver’s license or date of birth on the check in the event that the checks are fraudently written. This is done to draw up an arrest warrant if necessary and help insure that the right person is arrested.
I don’t know about New York but in my state one can request that the SS# be replaced by a separate drivers license number. You might ask your D.M.V if you can replace it or have it taken off.
