Can an individual state enforce a law to raise the minimum wage for only that 'one' state, or does there have to be an overall increase for all states?

Thanks Curt, I didn't know that each state's minimum wage could be different. I was reading something in the paper today that brought me to this question. All this time, I was thinking that all states had to be the same.

You're welcome, hon. Do you believe we should have such laws to begin with?

Not really, Curt. If a job is paying too little wages, then you have a choice to stay away from that job. If a business can't get anyone to work for such little wages, they might have sense enough to raise it own their own. Some businesses can afford to pay more than others, so that kinda make it seem unfair. According to the news, I think IL is ready to raise the minimum.

As a matter of fact, I'm not too fond of mandatory laws, (with the exception of crime.)

I agree with you but for a different reason: Business wanting to hire temporary, seasonal employees (e.g., students during the summer) should be able to offer low paying jobs, with no government mandated minimum wage.

Everytime some politician sucks up the voters by raising the minimum wage, employers have to either raise their prices or lower the number of temporary, entry level jobs they can offer.

Unfortunately, every time minimum wage increases, the costs of goods and services also increases.

The worst thing is this, what if I was earning $6 an hour... and the minimum wage went from $5 to $5.25 and hour... MY wage doesn't increase.. so the effort and time that went into advancing was totally nullified.

Sher,
You're right, of course. Raising the minimum wage is politicians' equivalent of the early Roman practice of holding free circuses for the masses and throwing loaves of bread to the people in the stands. It takes the public's minds off the real money being wasted by the government, who doesn't even have to pay for increased costs of the pay raise.

So long as this counrty is based upon a capitalist system there will always be a min wage. Please don't read this wrong. I am at fault too,but I woner why other people in other nation are given aid while Americans are left at the door.Yes I know that officials can't help everyone. When the founding fathers were first trying to set this country up with a style of govt that had never been tryed before they looked for a model and the one they found was the Iroquois Constitution. This Constitution is the oldest know , since the 13 century. The problem there was that the father had to patch a system together that would work for a larger pop. of people and one that would work that was based upon a monatary system. So what I see is that the problem started 200 years ago and each generation has tryed to patch the break in the dam. I am trying to chage the way the system works, I do not set back and point my finger.
