Is it a law in all states to have headlights on whenever it's raining, and you are using your wipers?

No. I don't know how common the law is, but i know it isn't the law in IN. I think it should be, though.

Thanks Methos. It's a law in Illinois. I was in a conversation about this and I said it was a law in every state, and someone else said it wasn't. I lose another argument. Frown

What would be the best way to research this to find out how many states hold this law?

New York has such a law. I thought Fla did too. In fact, I thought Florida was the first state to have such a law. I know they had the law about 20 years ago when I first went there. Have they since repealed it?

Yankees, you're right about Florida, because I just googled it and found this link. Almost at the bottom, you will see that Florida is included.

Common sense tells us to turn our headlights on when it's raining. I've heard the argument, "But it's daylight, I can see fine."

Well the lights are so OTHERS CAN SEE YOU!

Honi, while this site does not mention the headlight rule it does lists other driving laws broken out by state and what the penalty is for not following. It's a long page so keep scrolling to see all the different laws. Might come in handy sometime. Smile

State Auto Laws

As for GA law, according to the driver's manual:
"you must use your headlights between one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise; at any time when it is raining; or when visibility is limited."

Other countries? It's not law in the UK, though drivers increasingly have the sense to switch lights on whenever the visibility is reduced for any reason. I just wish the remaining few would learn that side lights (parking lights) are not good enough to be seen by in fog.

Thanks Georgia for the link. It's interesting comparing the laws in different states. Smile
