I live in Ga...

Does anyone know if it's illegal to stick fliers in mailboxes if you're not an authorized mail carrier?

I used to be a marketing director for an apartment management company. We were told that it is against FEDERAL law to place anything in a mailbox. We were told we would be fined for doing so.

You can, however, have an advertisement mailed to you (a flyer folded up and postage applied.)

I know a lot of people do it, but I believe they could be fined if reported.

I did that once, Kat. I'm not sure what the laws are there, but I got in trouble. I was told if I did it again, there could be a fine and imprisonment Eek It's a government thing. Roll Eyes

I didn't know it was illegal, so maybe that's why people are always sticking junk on my door. It seems like the gov shouldn't have any say in what goes in your personal mailbox. But, oh well...

You buy the mailbox but somehow it is USPS property. Go figure. Might be best though so we don't get tons more of snail spam.

Like everything else. You buy it, take care of it but it still belongs to the Feds.

Mail boxes fall under their control. Size and shape have to be approved by them.

Nothing can be put in a mail box unless the postal worker puts it there. To do so would be a federal crime.

We used to put a spare key in the mailbox. Just think, we could have been arrested. Big Grin Big Grin

It's my understanding that you cannot place anything IN a mailbox, but can leave litrature, newspapers, etc. on rings attached to a mailbox; that is why closed mailboxes have those "hooks" or rings attached to the bottom

I have been told by an Assistant Postmaster, that Nothing other than properly stamped or metered mail can be left, in or on, or in any way attached to or supported by a mailbox. To do so is a violation of federal law. This includes sticking something behind the mailbox, stuck between the box and a wall. I know that several local politicians have been warned about this, and one was told another violation would result in the PO taking action- The dreaded Mail Cops !

I grew up in a very small farming community in the Midwest. Only the rural route folk had mail boxes. The town folk had to go to the post office to pick up their mail. I seem to remember that some of the farms had two boxes; one for the stamped mail and a round tube for the newspaper. I don't know if this was legal or not. DD

The round tube was probably supplied by the newspaper, and probably had the name of the paper on it. (That was, the cost of supplying the tubes can be written off as advertising expenses.) Of course, it is legal; the round tube is not a US mail box, and not subject to postal regulations. - DG
