I don't know about other states. California voted Republican pretty consistently until about 1950, then swung to Democratic, and has been fairly consistently democratic since -- at least with respect to the Presidential races. Unfortunately for the Republicans, it was only in the 1960s that California became the most populous state (and therefore commanded the most electoral votes) -- before that it was New York.
