A pledge from Pelosi Setting a standard her party will be judged on in elections two years from now, Pelosi promised: “Democrats intend to lead the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history.”
Pelosi has already outlined a “First Hundred Hours” agenda.
The plan includes promises to reform lobbying, enact the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 commission, raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, cut the interest rate on student loans in half, streamline Medicare’s prescription drug program and expand federal funding for stem cell research.
She said she wants to work with Bush on a "new direction" on Iraq. - MSNBC -------- It remains to be seen if the Democrats honor their pledge better than the Republicans honored their "Contract with America." I am sure tht all of us look forward to seeing just how they do.

The Dems surely couldn't do any worse. I am in hopes that finally, the two parties can work TOGETHER to solve our many problems and improve on those things that need improved. I for one am for our country first irregardless of which party is in control.

Lets get one thing straight. There's not much the Democrats can do while Bush is still in office. Unfortunitely we had several voters that still voted in some Republicans instead of voting for change, so we don't have the 60% needed to overturn a Bush veto.
All we have is enough to shut Bush down (Gridlock) and that's a heck of a lot better that what we've had!
Gridlock means the rich won't get anymore tax cuts. Social Security can't be touched. No more anti-environmental legislation and pro corporate welfare. No more of our rights being taken away.
I'll take this congress over the last one any day.
What Social Security? There's enough to pay the current recipients, Congress has pirated the rest, leaving a bunch of government debt instruments as security.

Can the government afford to welsh on that debt any more readily than on the debt we owe China, Japan, and creditors all over the world? Hell hath no fury like a bunch of senior citizens!

We all better hope it never is in a situation where it has to.

One can hope (this one anyway) that the Democrats will get the real message that collaboration to seek solutions is what's wanted and needed. If, for example, they were earnestly to approach energy independence by convening a gathering of experts and legislators from both sides and come up with real, reasonable, and rational legislation, then bush would veto at his and his party's future peril. Legislation that bore no label other than that of wisdom. It's conceivable, if not too likely. Were that to happen, and were the populace to notice at whose instigation it occurred, and to contrast it to that of the last six years, I'd hazard that dems would be in control for a long time, including the White House. Such an outcome presupposes a level of rationality that in my more optimistic times I've attributed to liberal thinking. Let's see if it comes to pass. If I'm turning blue, it's not from holding my breath.
