Telstar was the first satellite for relaying signals (television and telephone) between parts of the Earth through space. It was launched for AT&T in 1962. The circuitry of the Telstar satellite was destroyed by a nuclear test on earth in 1963. Although I couldn't find information on what happened to the dead satellite, I'm sure that, without power, its orbit degraded and it fell into the atmosphere. Most of it would have been destroyed as it passed through the atmosphere.
