Is it true that an astroid came within 75,000 feet from hitting the earth last week?

Should we be scared?

75,000 feet sounds a little too close for comfort (that's within our atmosphere); are you sure it's not 75,000 miles?

Well, partially true. An Asteroid did come close to hitting us but it was 75,000 MILES. Click here to read the story about it.

But asteroids have been doing that as long as the solar system has existed -- billions of years. So it's obvious that most of them miss, or we wouldn't be here. It's just that for the first time in history we KNOW about it.
Anyway, a near miss is still a miss. It doesn't matter how near or far it was, it missed. It's not as if someone was aiming them at us, and the aim will improve with practice, so the next one will be closer. It's random.

According to CNN, the asteriod that passed within 75,000 miles of Earth was "the size of a football field." NASA's Near-Earth Object Project's website says that "the 100 meter-sized asteroid 2002 MN passed...the Earth on June 14, 2002, some three days prior to its discovery."

Apparently, this particular asteriod's course for the next few decades is now anticipated, and in the CNN article, Donald Yeomans (NASA), is quoted as saying, "This asteroid is not something to worry about."

Puppyblues, the NEO Program, (Near-Earth Object Program) maintains pages on their website that list both "Close Approaches" and "Current Impact Risks". You may find these interesting to take a look at.
